Review on the U.S. Bank Cash+ Visa Signature Card

U.S. Bank Cash+ Visa Signature Card

The best card in terms of freedom and flexibility.

If you’re the one who prefers to live according to one’s own rules, this card will ideally fit you. Unlike many other cards that come with already preset bonus categories, this card allows you to choose your own bonus categories. To make things even better for you, there is a rather high rewards rate and a great value that you’ll get on a long-term basis.

Features of the card and its bonuses

U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® Card

The card promises a cash back of 5% for the purchases made in bonus categories that change every quarter of a year. Mind that the maximal sum to be spent within one quarter amounts to $2,000. In other words, you can get 5% cash back on the total sum of $8,000 spent within a year. Additionally, the card allows you to choose two bonus categories by yourself. For these bonus categories the cash back of 5% also applies. The list of the categories may involve gym costs, phone bills, purchases at car rental places as well as fast food places. To crown it all, you’ll also get an unlimited 2% cash back on the purchases of the things you need everyday. For example, food, groceries and even your purchases at restaurants. All the other purchases will bring you a cash back of 1%.

In September 2017 the emitting bank came up with a limited-time offer for new cardholders. The rewards rates of 5%, 2% and 1% will be slightly increased during the first year of you using the card.

Pay attention to the fact that the card comes with no fee to be paid each year. It definitely contributes to the long-term value you get from using the card.

Comparison of the U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® Card and Chase Freedom® credit card

Card and Chase Freedom® credit cardIf you’re still doubting whether or not you should get the card, maybe you should consider a different option that’s also available for you – the Chase Freedom® credit card. It’s also beneficial when it comes down to high rewards rates. The fact is that it also offers a cash back of 5%. However, the crux of the matter here is that the bonus categories for which the rate applies are already preset. Besides, the total sum for which the cash back applies is lower – it’s $6,000 per year or $1,500 within one quarter of a year.

Even though the U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® Card has higher rewards rates to offer, it doesn’t have any sign-up bonus. This is the benefit that the Chase Freedom® can boast. It’s quite easy to get it – you only have to spend $500 during the first 3 months of using the card. If you manage to do it, you’ll be rewarded $150.

The reasons for you to consider applying for the card:

  • You’re looking for a card that implies flexibility in terms of bonus categories.
  • You’re looking for a card that you’re going to use for at least 2 next years.

The reasons for you to consider applying for the Chase Freedom®:

  • You spend a lot in the bonus categories offered by the card.
  • You’re looking for a card that you’re going to use for less than 2 years.

So, the biggest difference between the cards is that one of them has a sign-up bonus while the other doesn’t have it. Consequently, the Chase Freedom® allows you to get value quickly while the U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® Card is meant for those who like to get value on a long-term basis.

The bank is cheating on its cardholders. This refers to the sign-up bonus promised. Once you get the card, you’ll be notified that you’ll get the bonus during the period of additional 12 weeks after the first 90 days of you using the card. The fact is that you never get it. I learned it from my own experience. I tried contacting the customer support service for an explanation. They told me that my account simply doesn’t qualify for this special offer. My recommendation is to not even bothering to get the card.

The bank promises you rewards that you’ll never get. I used US Bank credit card to pay for my yoga classes. The classes are carried put by an organization that’s on the list of the bank’s partners. I was hoping to get 5% cash back for paying with the card. Well, I found out that this wasn’t their partner, it was just provided as an example. This was mentioned in a footnote of the agreement. I’m more than disappointed. I’m going to cancel the card and look for a different one.

I’m not using the card much currently. It was a great card for me sometime ago, when they promised a high reward for paying with it at restaurants. Now, they’ve significantly decreased the rate and I don’t see the card as beneficial for me as it was before. I hope they’ll bring the restaurants rewards rate back to the same level one day.

I think the card is very beneficial for those people who plan to pay off in full each month so that not to carry any balance. I can say that I extremely dislike paying interest. That’s why I always pay in full. The US Bank Cash+ is very advantageous for me. I prefer having this card than traditional cash back cards with preset bonus categories. The thing is that I don’t spend that much on gas and I’m not going to Starbucks very often. This card allows me to choose 2 bonus categories by myself. This is very convenient.
